MFC-2 Mass Flow Controller

Reliability, Control, Precision

  •  Two channels
  • Works with analog mass flow control valves
  • Displays set & read for both channels simultaneously
  • Standalone or computer controllable operation
  •  Analog and serial data outputs

CONTROL. Accurate flow control is vital in applications such as respirometry, process control or gas mixing. Conventional flow meters and control valves are temperature- and pressure-dependent, making them unsuitable for critical work. Fortunately, temperature and pressure do not affect mass flow control valves, which deliver a closely-regulated output continuously corrected to STP.
PRECISION. The MFC-2 Mass Flow Controller Meter is outstandingly accurate and provides the precise supply and control voltages required to power and control industry-standard mass flow control valves and mass flow meters. The compact MFC-2 mass flow control electronics unit runs on uncritical 9 - 18VDC (adapter supplied with unit) and will not contribute significant error to any mass flow control system.

FEATURES and EASE OF USE.   You control two  mass flow control valves simultaneously.

  • The two line alphanumeric display shows accurate set and the actual mass flow rates of attached mass flow controllers.
  • The MFC-2 is extremely easy to operate. Flow rates are set with a quick intuitive menu.  All adjustments and settings are permanently retained in the absence of power.
  • High quality front panel rotary encoders make the instrument’s operation as intuitive and flexible as possible.
  • Two analog outputs allow the flow rates of attached mass flow controllers and mass flow meters to be read by data acquisition systems.
  • Serial connections allows the output setpoints and readings to be logged. Serial input can also be used to control the unit.

THE RELIABLE CHOICE. Unlike budget alternatives such as rotameters, you’ll want to use mass flow control valves because they deliver a closely regulated output continuously corrected to STP.  Such valves require reliable controllers. Sable’s MFC-2 Mass Flow Control Unit has the electronic infrastructure required for accurate operation.  With an externally set output it is ideal for research,  or in various R&D environments in which precise control of gas flow rates is required. MFC-2 Specifications:

  1. Power Requirements: Nominal 12 Volts DC (11-15 Volts DC range) at up to 1A, depending on the number of flow controllers connected. Fully protected against reverse polarity connection.
  2. Power Outputs: Internally generated, isolated supplies of +15.0 ± 0.25V and -15.0 ± 0.25V at up to 350 mA each per mass flow controller/meter. Regulation over the full load range is better than 0.1%. Note that these supplies are fully isolated from the +12V input, eliminating grounding conflicts and ground loop noise.
  3. Accuracy and Resolution: Two-line, 16 character alphanumeric LCD display with backlight displays set and read information for both channels, and displays prompts for the instrument’s straightforward, intuitive menu system.
  4. Controller/meter Connectors: Two 15 pin D-sub connectors on rear panel.  The required control cable will depend upon the flow control valve used.  Cables for many common mass flow control valves are available from Sable Systems
  5. Flow meter output: Two fully buffered, short circuit proof outputs are supplied, available from high-quality isolated BNC sockets on the front panel. Outputs range from 0.000V (no flow) to 5.000V (100% of the meter’s full scale flow range), with linear scaling in between. The outputs are electrically accurate to 0.05%. However, please note that the accuracy of these outputs is ultimately dependent on the accuracy of the attached mass flow meter or controller, which will seldom be better than 1%.
  6. Serial I/O: RS-232 protocol, 9600 - 115200 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit. Can accept commands in poll mode or output regular comma-delimited ASCII set and read strings for both channels at a user-specified interval.
  7. Flow scaling outputs: These outputs supply a very accurate, adjustable 0.000 - 5.000V to the mass flow controllers, causing them to deliver 0 to 100% of their full scale flow rate. An extremely stable aerospace-grade voltage reference IC with temperature stability better than 0.01% over a 0 - 50°C range supplies the reference voltage, which should never need to be adjusted. The control voltage, derived from the reference voltage, is set by the user via the front panel and the quick, intuitive menu system, and buffered by a precision output stage prior to being routed to the appropriate mass flow controller valve. The outputs will power most commercial mass flow control valves and are short circuit proof.
  8. Case: heavy-gauge aluminum, fully shielded, 6” x 7” x 4”.
